As you can see, this is a website still under construction. I was out last Tuesday, looking for a voice I seemed to have misplaced someplace, and wouldn't you know, it seems to have gone missing again. I think there will be a short class Thursday the 9th, when I'll introduce this. For Monday, I'd like to have you
Read, in Working, The Forward and the Introduction, and Three (count them Three) Prefaces
- Forward by Adam Cohen (ix-x)
- PREFACE I : Who Built the Pyramids (Mike LeFevre) XXXI
- PREFACE II: WHO SPREAD THE NEWS?
- Billy Carpenter, XXXIX
- Cliff Pickens, XL
- Terry Pickens, XL
- Carl Murray Bates, XLV
We may finish off any discussion of Rachel and her Children which we don't get to Thursday the 9th, and then we'll proceed to thinking about the Terkel Book. I want you to think about why all this material appears in a section marked with roman numerals rather than with the rest of the book (especially consider the three Prefaces). Do they, plus the introduction shed light on Terkel's ideals and his reasons for writing this book.
Sometime soon, we will watch the musical built on parts of the book. I'll show a section from it today, and ask you whether it would be better to read the sections of the book first or watch the musical first. I'll make up my mind based on the discussion.
Above are a series of interviews and discussions with Studs Terkel. Watch as many as you can before class. Remember that the video will take the whole class period. I may try to start it a little early, try to be a bit early, if you can.
Did any of you ever have a newspaper route? I did, when I was about the age of Billy, Cliff, and Terry. It is an old, old occupation for boys (and girls, later on). My route was a local paper, once a week. Click the image to read a book by Horatio Alger, who wrote children's books in the 19th century, entitled Rough and Ready; or, Life Among the New York Newsboys
