I will introduce the class, doing all the traditional things:

• Introduce myself and call the roll
  

• Distribute the paper syllabus
  

• "Show and Tell" the books for the course.
  

• Demonstrate the Class Website and Blackboard
  

• Explain that there will be no more paper syllabi, but that there will be a weekly website update.
  

• Entertain any initial questions concerning the class.
  

Then I will show a short film. 

Those of you who took Urban America saw this film or one like it early in the semester.  It won’t hurt you to look at it again.  For the rest of you, I’m hoping you’ll find it a treat.  As you watch this film

• I want you to imagine yourselves as part of this community, and
  

• imagine yourself as a participant in this event, rather than simply an observer of it. 
  

• What does it “feel” like to you?
  

• Have you ever experienced a similar occasion?  If so, what? 
  

We may have some time to discuss this after the film’s showing.  If we’re not all discussed out, we’ll continue the discussion on Tuesday next.
