For Monday, April 6Interclass Contact and Social Mobility
Remember I’m going to ask you for your two Terkel character choices this class period.
Download and Read, From the Internet:
When Richer Weds Poorer, Money Isn't the Only Difference by Tamara Lewin
Up From the Holler: Living in Two Worlds, at Home in Neitheralso Lewin

Make sure you look at the two interactive slide shows, as well.

We touched upon the subject of mobility and losing one’s roots once before, while we were watching People Like Us.  You might want to go back and review the script for the section Don’t Get Above Your Raisin’.  As you read this, see what you can make of the various problems these people face.

Think, too whether certain modifications might change the dynamic.  For example, suppose the genders were reversed in When Richer Weds Poorer, or the heroine of Up from the Holler were a hero instead.

The Inter-Cultural Center presents
A Community Conversation
Class Matters
4:00 - 5:30
Bay View Room, The Law School

I’d like to have as many of the class attend as is possible.  I’ll be there for the first 45 minutes, and longer if I can get my 5:00 class to agree to meet at 5:30 instead.

For Thursday, April 9 An Introduction to Working
In 1978 a musical based on Studs Terkel’s book opened on Broadway.  A revival is opening this spring.  I have a recording of the original cast and we’ll take a look at that.  This should give us a good feel for the concerns Terkel had in compiling this particular set of oral histories.  No new readings for this class.  You have a little something on Shipler to work through.
