What I’m most concerned about now is the progress you’re making (or not making) on Samaritan.  I hate to start pulling a work of fiction apart and analyzing it before people have a chance to experience it as a whole.  But time marches on, and I plan to begin working with it on Monday, March 2 .  Ready or not, here we come.  Next week I’ll post the topic for the paper I will be asking you to write on the book.
For Monday, February 23
No New Reading.  I’m going to show parts one and two of a very interesting film, “People like us,” one of the many excellent documentaries produced by PBS.  The video too two long for one class period, so I’ll show parts one and two on Tuesday, and parts III and IV on Thursday.  There will be some time to discuss the sections during the class period, and I do want you to reflect on the sections in your journal--reflect on the stories individually.  This goes for Thursday, as well.

For those who like this sort of thing, I’m making two resources availabl.  The first of these is a transcript of the dialogue.  This may be especially interesting to any of you who are interested in Creative Writing.  The second is a Teachers’ Guide, which may be of interest to those of you looking to a teaching career.  I encourage you to read these, though I’m not requiring it.

As is often the case with PBS, the documentary is accompanied by a very thorough website (that’s where the Teacher’s Guide and the Transcript came from).  Do visit it sometime.  There are games to play, out-takes to watch, and lots of additional resources.  Sometime before the end of the semester I’m going to have you play the games, so you might as well do it now   (provided you’ve finished Samaritan)
